Happy New Year to all and the best to you and yours in the New Year! Rather than getting political, I thought I would take a moment to share something personal.

For some reason, my 6-year-old granddaughter wanted to play Truth or Dare on New Year’s Eve. I’m a bit too old for a dare that might come out of an active 6-year-old so I picked truth.

Her question was: What is the funniest thing you have ever done? Wow, that one took me back to a flood of memories but here it is.

One year during a shop Christmas party one of my co-workers fell asleep at his desk. I won’t say he passed out but you get the picture.

We decided to loosely tie him to his chair. His arms were tied to the arms of the chair and his feet to the bottom roller arms. We loosely placed one piece of 550 cord around his waist and tied it to the back of the chair.

We then set the clock ahead by a few hours and turned all the lights off except one small light that illuminated the clock. There were no windows in the shop so outside light would not be a problem.

We crouched behind the parachute racks so we would be hidden and still able to see what was to come next.

One of our young Airmen was assigned to go into the next office and call the shop phone, one of which resided on the desk in front of our tied up comrade.

The phone rang as we watched our tied up buddy suddenly awake. There was just enough slack in the 550 cord that his arms were able to almost reach the phone. His arm suddenly jerked back as it reached the end of the tether as the phone continued to ring.

With just enough slack to put his hands on the arms of his chair, he tried to stand, only to be pulled back to the seat by a much shorter lead around his feet and waist.

As he started to become more aware of his situation the cursing and muttering began. His chair swiveled towards the clock to see the time. The clock showed it was after 1900 hours.

Between the muttering and cursing, we heard him say “Barb is going to kill me!” Barb was, of course, his wife and we later discovered he was supposed to be somewhere that evening. We could not have planned that one in our wildest dreams.

At this point, none of us could contain ourselves and the laughter erupted from behind the parachute racks. We flipped on the lights and let him off the hook explaining that it was really only 1600 hours. Barb was not going to kill him!

He never fell asleep at his desk again.
