Most of us have our own 9/11 stories to tell. Where we were, what we were doing, and how we reacted. As veterans, countless of us saw things from a different angle. For many of us, fear did not grip us as it did many civilians. Anger might have been the most obvious emotion. However, we knew not to let our emotions prevent us from logical action.

Being in a one of a kind, specialized unit for 22 years, 8 months, and 11 days, we deployed to almost every conflict. Six total in my time of service. Not to mention those missions that are not likely part of the official record. At least you will likely never find them mentioned on Wikipedia or History.com.

In Sep 2001, we were cashing in on our tax-free money and combat pay for the month of September. We cleared the designated combat zone just in time to get the whole month of September tax-free and our extra pay. Yep, that’s how we saw it at the time. Fear was not part of it. We knew we were part of the most elite and powerful military in the world. Most of us had been on many missions before. It was one of those “been there done that” moments.

When we landed we found ourselves in the middle of our fellow Spec Ops from all branches of the service. Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines The branch of service was not a factor. Talk about one Hell of a Team! I can’t properly express the love I have for my brothers and sisters who I served with. It is beyond words.

It is not the hardships that stick out in my mind post-attack on the 11th of September. It is the fantastic people that I had the privilege to serve alongside that stands out all these years later. Sure, there was hardship and pain. However, the memories that stick are the good ones.

Today remember the dead and love the living. Make no mistake. We will defend our country against all enemies, foreign and domestic. God bless all patriot brothers and sisters and God bless America!
