I spent some time with a fellow vet for Trump this past weekend. We discussed my post called A NAGGING QUESTION ON GUNS. My friend observed that many people might be turned off by the mere mention of God. The suggestion was to use a word like “morality” instead. My friend knows that my main goal is to “win the middle” because that is where elections are won.
I’ve had a couple of days to think about it and thought I should follow up. Here is an important quote from that post:
I was not brought up in a church-going family. However, I was taught that there was a God and one day I would answer to Him. Generally speaking, my friends were all taught the same things whether they went to church or not.
There is no doubt that my friend was expressing a real concern. Some would be turned off and tune out at the very use of the term “God”. That is precisely my point. Tuning out over the simple usage of the word God or a Bible quote is exactly the thing that has changed in my lifetime. Sure, there have always been those without faith in God but the numbers are and have been growing.
We cannot forget our history. What led us to where we are today? We cannot understand where we are if we are not in touch with where we have been. The old saying is true: ‘Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.’
Our founders invoked an understanding of our relationship to God at many points.
It might benefit some to take a quick look at this website. Here is just one quote worth remembering:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights.”
This is a matter of history. Our founding fathers said our rights come from God and not Government. This one thing is at the very core of what is dividing our country today.
The government cannot limit racism, mass shootings or any other ill unless it becomes a tyrannical power over the population. That is where the Left wants to take us. They want the government to have more power. They want to control your money. They want to control your healthcare. They want to control your speech. They are the thought police. They will write Christianity out of our history if we allow it. They will replace God with Government if we allow it. George Orwell said it best in the book 1984: “Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.”
Do not misunderstand. There are many factors relating to the ills of our society. I am sure social media, news media, video games, and Hollywood play some part in the degradation of our culture. If those things are partly to blame why would we overlook the obvious? If we cannot talk about how our changing views of religion have impacted our society we are lost.
There is nothing more the Left would like than to continue to stigmatize religion, especially the Christian faith. They want us to substitute words like “morality” for Godly or Christian values. Again, if we start to modify or deny history and words the Left wins. I am not asking people to believe in God or any faith. I am asking people to accept the part that God and faith played in our history and respect it. I know I may lose some in the middle by being direct about factual history. However, I suppose if people are turned off by facts and history they are not the audience I hope to reach.
Vets for Trump welcomes comments that promote the conversation in a positive direction. Derogatory remarks are deleted or marked as spam.
