I don’t know about you but I’m learning an awful lot under the presidency of Donald Trump. For example, I always thought NAFTA and Free Trade meant there were no trade barriers or tariffs between Canada and Mexico and the United States etc.

So I decided to get into Wikipedia to educate myself a little bit on the subject. All I can say is wow this stuff is complicated. One of my favorite sayings is nothing is as simple as it first appears.

I hear a lot of people criticizing president Trump on his views relating to trade. However, if you stop and think about it we’ve needed somebody to go over this complicated subject for a long time. I don’t see what’s wrong with going over everything country-by-country and line by line.

In addition, it’s not like President Trump has the time to do all this by himself. I am sure he has a team of economic experts looking at all these trade agreements and advising him.

One can imagine As Time passed these original trade agreements have evolved. It’s like needing to keep your eye on the nuclear programs of a rogue Nation. Every country is out there looking at their own best interest. America has been going along happily assuming everyone has been playing Fair until President Trump.

We only need to look at the Debt to GDP ratio to realize the USA our Debt to GDP is worse than China, India, Brazil, Argentina, Austrailia, Indonesia, Korea, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, Poland, Russia, Taiwan, and Turkey.

While that does not tell the whole story it does help to put things in perspective. It is also important to note the Debt to GDP Clock linked to above does not reflect trade imbalances with particular countries.  That’s where we really get into the weeds.

Now we have a Commander-in-chief whose main focus in life has been negotiations. I don’t see what all the hubbub and nervousness is about. Thank God we have a President with his background.

Since the economy is usually the number 1 issue in national elections, isn’t it time we start focusing on that?  We have been fielding Presidents with no understanding of the economy. That’s like putting in a Commander in charge of a battlefield with no background in warfare.
