A Never Trump veteran friend asked that question in a private message. Let me repeat that I have friends who call themselves Democrats, and now my first Republican Never Trumper friend. These relationships were formed long before any of us thought of discussing politics, so the root of our friendships is not based on that.
I grant him this: the MAGA or Republican party is divided on this issue. I’ll do my best to present my answer.
- It was always about oil. Need I explain the history on that? I hope not. Look it up. Same for Venezuela.
- America First does not mean isolationism.
- The free flow of oil also helps the American economy. That is America First, even if it helps the world at the same time. It’s great when you can help yourself and the world.
- A weakened Iran reduces the threat. They have been chanting Death to America for decades. When someone threatens your country, maybe you should take them seriously. That is America First.
- A free Iran restrains Russia and China. No more cheap drones for Russia and no more cheap oil for China. China would have to pay global prices. Russia has oil, but not enough production to ramp up after Venezuela no longer provides China with oil. All were selling at a discount to Chian but Russia would likely raise the “friendship” price, costing China many billions more.
- Iran is the geographic “bridge” for China’s Belt and Road Initiative and Russia’s route to the Indian Ocean. A pro-Western or even just a neutral, democratic Iran slams that door shut. Instead of a partner that helps them bypass U.S. sanctions, they’d face a competitor that aligns with the global economy.
- Moscow and Beijing love the Iranian regime because it keeps the U.S. distracted and bogged down in the Middle East. A stable, free Iran removes that chaos, allowing the U.S. to focus its full attention and resources directly on competing with Russia and China.
- Obama’s decision in 2009 is actually one of the biggest mistakes in modern foreign policy, and even he eventually admitted it was a mistake. I know this will be contentious so here is the link with the video.
- It does not require an Iraq War-style invasion. It could be as simple as cyber attacks, a few leadership removals, and/or intelligence help.
So, there is my answer. Many will disagree, but I was only asked for my answer. If you disagree, feel free to comment below, or if on Social Media, I may repost your objections.

spot on. we’ll developed and delivered explanation…
My personal feeling is that “defeating ” China and Russia financially is more important than militarily. Why ? Because the financial method would save millions of lives. Proof is in the pudding and I know the ingredients.
