After Trump’s big 9-0 Supreme Court win we await the announcement of who will be running against President Trump. I thought it an opportune time to mention two issues most Americans agree on besides the border and the economy: Student Loan Forgiveness and Reparations. These topics, though not exhaustive of the challenges within the Democratic party, serve as poignant examples of the flawed thinking within the party.
Student Loan Forgiveness
Trump took a stance on handling the current student debt crisis that was pragmatic. Republican Senators created 5 bills to prevent it from being a crisis in the future. You can read about the various stances at this link and decide what you think makes more sense, the Democrat policy or Republican policy.
Unlike Trump’s plan, Biden’s initial student debt cancellation plan, the Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) rule does not actually “forgive” debt. Instead, it shifts the burden of $559 billion in federal student loans onto the 87 percent of Americans who do not have student loans, those who opted not to pursue higher education, or individuals who have already responsibly paid off their debts.
Under this rule, the majority of bachelor’s degree student loan borrowers will not be required to repay even the principal amount of their loans. Furthermore, 91 percent of new student debt would qualify for reduced payments, which would be subsidized by taxpayers.
In addition to its inherent unfairness, President Biden’s proposed student loan cancellation plan fails to address the underlying factors that have led to the accumulation of student debt. Specifically, there is a lack of accountability for colleges and universities in regards to the rising costs of tuition and fees. Over the past three decades, tuition and fees at private non-profit colleges have increased by 80 percent, while at public four-year institutions, they have risen by 124 percent.
We are doomed to repeat the same mistakes under liberal policies. Since most colleges are run by liberals and 90% of donations go to Democrats then liberals should pay for out-of-control student loan debt if anyone should.
Reparations
California has been in the news again in relation to reparations. Governor Gavin Newsom has been floated as a potential replacement for Biden. Gavin Newsom has a 44% approval in his home state. He is under a second Recall in less than 3 years. He has many unpopular stances and is a failed leader but his state’s stance on reparations is shocking.
Consider that California was admitted to the United States as a free state where slavery was not legal. In other words white people who did not own slaves would be held responsible to black people who were not enslaved, at least not in California.
Similarly, many whites and blacks came to America after the Civil War. Should they in any way be responsible to pay or receive benefits? Oh and let’s not forget that about 320,000 white Union soldiers died during the American Civil War to free slaves. You mean that’s not enough? Don’t forget, it was the Democrats who owned and supported slavery. I’ve previously pointed out the Republican party was created to free slaves.
The Republicans rapidly gained supporters in the North, and in 1856 their first presidential candidate, John C. Fremont, won 11 of the 16 Northern states. By 1860, the majority of the Southern slave states were publicly threatening secession if the Republicans won the presidency. In November 1860, Republican Abraham Lincoln was elected president over a divided Democratic Party, and six weeks later South Carolina formally seceded from the Union. Source History.com
Most Americans, 68% are against reparations. That does not mean racism doesn’t exist (in multiple directions) nor does it deny the horrors of slavery. However, did anyone remember it was Africans selling other Africans into slavery in the first place? Therefore, it is only logical that Africans and non-Republicans should pay reparations if it ever comes to that. Also, should all whites go after Turks for reparations?
Trump has more support from black and Hispanics than any previous Republican Presidential candidate without false promises of reparations. His policy is to give them a hand up instead of a hand out. That way it leads to a sense of meaning and purpose in life and reduces feelings of victimhood for future generations. I can guarantee I am not teaching my black granddaughter, who lives with me, to be a victim.
Sidenote: Many names have been floated as potential Democrat replacements for Biden. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan has a 48% approval in her home state. She faced 14 recall petitions in 2021 alone. I never knew that and thought I would just throw it in there in case they decide to run her.
