The other day I was on the phone with a very good friend. He is a Democrat buddy, civilian, and small business owner for about 10 years. We are both in our 60s. My friend John is not a far-left guy. If Ben Carson had won the 2016 Primary John would have voted for Ben.

While on the phone John said: “I wish I could see Trump through your eyes.” It sounded sincere. After spending hours trying to write about Trump through my eyes I have given up. It ends up being more along the lines of a short story rather than a blog post. I’m going to spare you all the details. Instead, my veteran buddy Mac and I did two videos. They are each less than 10 minutes. Both have been uploaded at the bottom of this post.

My Dem civilian friend John met my veteran buddy Mac a couple of years ago. We all get along great! I think it is important to understand a little bit of a person’s life history. Where we come from determines how we see things. I go into that in my video. The thing Mac and I as well as most other veterans share is a pragmatic approach to life. We are results-oriented. Also, our feelings are not easily hurt.

To be fair, I think I have seen Trump through the eyes of people who hate Trump and those who simply disapprove. Hate and disapproval are usually about his personality rather than policy. Rarely do I hear a Democrat talk about Trump’s policies.

My Dem friend John said his main reason for being a Dem is the environment. My other Dem friend Stan’s reason for being a Dem is healthcare. Those are policy issues rather than emotional. While we may see things differently on those issues I respect that it is a policy difference. They both think Dems do a better job on the two issues. Those are subjects for another two posts.

Bottom line: We should not believe all the hype in the news. Good people can differ and remain friends. There is nothing I would not do for my Democrat friends and I believe they would do the same for me. To civilians: In order to set the tone it might be best to view this 2-minute video that will open in a new window from the movie Full Metal Jacket.
